Finding Texture Parts using 3DS

This tutorial will show you how to find what part of a texture corresponds to what part of a model.

This is useful when you are trying to make a change in the texture of a specific part of a model, but do not know what section of the texture that part is located in.

The first thing you want to do is save the model of the item that we want to check the texture for, and open it in 3DS.

Finding Specific Parts

I will be using the Aka Oni Hara-ate, because it has a lot of parts to demonstrate.

Selecting the Part

The first thing we must do is select the mesh part that contains the piece of the gear were interested in.

Selecting the modifier

Next we go to the modify tab, open Editable Mesh in the Modifier list, and select Element.

Highlighting the Parts

Next we highlight the parts we are interested in. (ctrl + click for multiple)
These are the parts that we want to locate in the texture maps.

Opening the UV Editor

Back in the Modify tab, we want to add the Unwrap UVW modifier, and select Open UV Editor ...

Edit UVWs Window

In this window, change the map to any one you'd like, I prefer the Normal Map for visibility.
Click on the Icon with the 4 small squares.
Finally drag the window up (usually middle mouse button)

Results

There you have it, we have now located the areas of the texture map that are associated with a specific part of the model.

Viewing All Parts

Select All Parts

To do a general overview of how all the parts in the mesh are laid out in the texture, we first select all the mesh parts in the group that we are interested in.

Opening the UV Editor

In the Modify tab, we want to add the Unwrap UVW modifier, and select Open UV Editor ...

Edit UVWs Window

In this window, change the map to any one you'd like, I prefer the Normal Map for visibility.

Finally drag the window up (usually middle mouse button)

Comparing parts

To select entire areas first we select Polygon and Select By Element UV
Lastly we highlight a section of the texture maps UV and we can immediately see the associated model piece.
